Chell Instruments 2432T 32-channel thermocouple scanner for temperature

Called 2432T, “it measures all types of thermocouples with high accuracy and at high speed, and outputs the data over interfaces that including Modbus, iDDS, IENA, Netscanner, or Chell native TCP/IP protocol or UDP protocol”, according to the company.

Its construction includes a copper enclosure, known as a uniform temperature reference or UTR.

This equalises internal connection temperatures, allowing cold-junction compensation to be performed for differing types of thermocouple – multiple temperature sensors, including RTDs, are built-in to keep cold-junction errors below 0.15°C, said Chell.

Each channel is isolated from the others up to ±1kV and has its own 24bit ADC. These are mutually synchronised, and convert at up to 250Hz.

Resolution is ±0.03µV (0.001°C K-type) and accuracy is better than ±10µV (0.26°C K-type, or 0.27°C N-type). Noise is below 3µV, and the complete list of compatible thermocouples is: B, E, J, K, N, R, S and T.

Real-time circuit impedance measurements are included to detect open-circuits and short-circuits in the thermocouple loops, and “also give the user a measurement of the thermocouple impedance, a really useful feature in the complex test environments that we operate in”, said Chell. “To monitor the health and environment of the 2432T, the excitation supplies, internal temperature and internal absolute pressure are available over the embedded web server.”

The unit weighs 2.6kg and, without mounting feet or connectors, measures ~90 x 90 x 200mm.

Sensor connections are though pairs of M3 screw terminals, and each pair gets an M3 grounding terminal.

Power requirements are 24 to 50Vdc (1A max at 24V) or IEEE 802.3at PoE (power-over-Ethernet).

Operation is over -20 to+90°C and under vibrations expected near jet engines.

Based in Norfolk UK, Chell has been making pressure, vacuum and gas flow measurement equipment since 1976. Its markets include aerospace, pharmaceuticals, energy and motorsport.
