Ford said the company couldn’t offer more without harming its future prospects after union employees recently expanded UAW’s strike.
One day after union-backed workers walked out of automaker Ford’s largest factory, the company said it has no plans to increase its offer to the United Auto Workers as thousands remain on strike.
Speaking with media outlets Oct. 12, a Ford executive said the company “can’t raise the value of its offer to the United Auto Workers and stay viable,” according to The Washington Post.
“We have reached our limit,” Ford Blue President Kumar Galhotra told reporters. “We’ve actually stretched ourselves to get to this point.”
Approximately 33,000 UAW-backed workers have been on strike against Ford, General Motors and Chrysler parent Stellantis for roughly a month. On Oct. 11, thousands of workers at Ford’s truck and SUV plant in Louisville, Kentucky, expanded the strike when they opted to walk off the job.
Union leaders said they took additional action because Ford “’refused to make further movement’ in contract bargaining for better wages, benefits and job security,” The Post reported.
Ford executives told reporters the company is looking for “creative solutions” to met UAW needs, while union leaders said the company hasn’t presented better terms that they’ve been promising.
