Huber+Suhner marine cable

“Specifically designed for long-term durability in harsh conditions, the Radox family of cables combine electrical performance with strong mechanical and chemical resistance,” claimed the company. “Designed for use in battery and fuel energy systems on vessels, Radox 155(S) and Radox Elastomer S received certification.”

They are certified up to 1.5kVdc and 1kVac, from -40°C to +130°C over 50,000 hours, and are also compliant with ISO 19642 and IEC 60332-1-2 “ensuring long-term reliability and fire safety”, said the company.

There are 14 sizes of cable from 2.5mm2 to 150mm2 in the pre-certified range, but only the middle 12 have been DNV approved (certificate TAE000053) – from 4mm2 (56x 0.31mm strands, 4.7Ω/km) to 120mm2 (589x 0.51mm strands, 0.15mΩ/km), which are 5.8 to 22.4mm respectively in diameter.

Minimum bend radius is 4x diameter installed, or 6x diameter when flexing.

Each includes an electrically-isolated braided copper screening layer.

“This certification opens the door to new opportunities in the maritime sector, particularly for hybrid and fully electric vessels,” said the company.

Applications are foreseen in battery wiring, on-board chargers ac-dc charging sockets and in auxiliary systems. The cables are also for vehicles – they are tolerant of motor oil, fuels and hydrolysis.
