£51.7 million of the sum was in relation to “personal claims for deceit and/or misrepresentation against Dr Lynch and Mr Hussain” said the judgment.

The civil case was for damages for fraud in the £7.4 billion sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011. The judge said that HP would have paid £23 a share instead of  the £25.50 a share it actually paid if it had known the true financial position of Autonomy.

A hearing will divide how the damages will be split between Hussain and the estate of Mike Lynch who was drowned  last year when his yacht, Bayesian, capsized in a storm. His estate is thought to be worth about £500 million.

The civil case in London preceded a criminal case in New York in which Lynch was found not guilty.
