TI 4K DLP controller

Describing the controller, DLPC8445, as “90% smaller than the previous generation”, the company said that it can be used in lifestyle and gaming projectors “that achieve sub-millisecond display latency, matching or exceeding the world’s most high-end gaming monitors and reducing lag time for gamers”.

Maximum 4K frame rate is 60Hz, increasing to 240Hz for 1,080p use.

Together with the 15 x 15mm DLPA3085 power supply and LED driver IC, the controller and the 24.50mm × 11.00mm DMD form a chip-set for 4K projection displays.

“Immersive display entertainment is now sought out by everyday consumers, not just movie enthusiasts and gamers,” TI digital light projector general manager Jeff Marsh. “Where consumers once needed a big TV or monitor for a crisp and clear display, they can now use a lifestyle or gaming projector and transform a wall into the screen size of their choosing.”

For gamers, the controller includes variable refresh rate where frame rate can be slowed during computationally-intensive scenes “allowing designers to sync frame rates and eliminate lagging, image tearing and stuttering”, said TI, and is designed to be compatible with laser-illuminated battery-powered projectors.

DLPC8445 is the first device of a family of controllers for DMDs of different sizes and resolutions.
