Sony enables Camera Remote Command through ISO-PTP

This removes restrictions to third party software to remotely control aspects of shooting, monitoring, and file transfer in Sony cameras, highlighted the company.

Camera Remote Command

Possible applications for Camera Remote Command include 3D image scanning (automating the settings of multiple Sony cameras at once, for example) and operating drone photography (it supports the matching of GNSS data and captured images, for example).

The development means it will be easier to operate different brands of camera products through a single software application, or apply existing software to Sony digital cameras, when using specific control platforms or operating systems.

The remote control is achieved using a communication protocol that is Sony’s proprietary extension of the ISO standard PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol), and command references and sample code are available for developers.

SDK

Sony has also made a new version (V1.12) available of its existing software development kit, the Sony Camera Remote SDK.

It writes:

“Version 1.12 expands the range of compatible Sony camera models and now supports the α9 III, one of Sony’s full-frame interchangeable lens camera, offering a more efficient workflow when using Sony digital cameras to take remote photographs in a business or professional setting, such as inspections, surveying and e-commerce.”

Among other features, the new version supports the use of Wi-Fi connection control (in addition to USB and Ethernet connections), for operation in environments where wired connections are difficult.

Additionally, around 100 dedicated automation functions are available for use (on the α1, α7 IV and the α7S III cameras, note), including the remote switching of available memory card slots for recording still images or videos. You can also swit the ISO AUTO upper/lower limit according to what is being captured and the lighting conditions.

“We are committed to helping developers and creators design bespoke applications tailored to industrial needs,” Christie Patel, European Marketing Lead B2B at Sony Europe, told Electronics Weekly. “With this in mind, we strive to empower them to operate different brands of camera products as conveniently as possible, using a single software application, or applying existing software to Sony digital cameras.”

“We felt it was the right time to share Camera Remote Command, as well as releasing a new version of our SDK, so that customers can choose the most suitable method for their development goals and applications.”

Note that both “Camera Remote Command” and “Camera Remote SDK” will now collectively be referred to as “Camera Remote Toolkit” by Sony.
