Motion plastics and cable specialist Igus has developed the world’s first energy chain made from recycled material based on its own e-chain recycling program.
The E2.1.CG cradle-chain represents a complete range of e-chains assembled with the new igumid CG material. Laboratory testing confirms that this e-chain offers virtually identical technical properties and load limits as an energy chain based on the standard igumid G material.
As part of its “chainge” recycling program, Igus has taken delivery of used energy chains from customers since 2019. Both Igus e-chains and products from other manufacturers have been collected across 13 countries, amassing more than 32 tons of material. A 500 ton collection goal has been set for 2022.

The material is sorted, cleaned and processed to new quality. The resulting post-consumer material igumid CG is then used to manufacture recycled cradle-chain without any loss of quality in terms of wear behavior, stability or bending fatigue. The process reportedly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 28%.
