The location of lead service lines can be quickly determined by water utilities and communities through application of a proprietary software tool developed by analytics company BlueConduit. Application of the machine learning platform reduces total time consumers are exposed to lead, maximizes available funding by helping remove all lead service lines efficiently and analyzes risk so operators can prioritize replacement services.

The software is available to cities, water utilities and engineering companies, and has helped more than 50 U.S. cities, including Flint, Michigan, save hundreds of millions of dollars. Over 1 million service lines, which serve over 2 million people, have been inventoried to date.

The platform analyzes current data about lead pipes, formulates an inspection plan to verify what is known and unknown, and provides predictions of presence of lead service lines. Real-time maps presented on a dashboard to water utility managers also allows consumers to view progress on lead pipe replacements in their community.
